Zomato Makes History: First Indian Startup to Join Elite BSE Sensex 30 Index
Food delivery platform Zomato has achieved a historic first by securing a spot in the prestigious BSE Sensex 30 index, taking over from JSW Steel Limited.
Zomato's inclusion in the elite index is quite an achievement for India's startup ecosystem. It shows a significant shift in the country's corporate landscape, which industrial and financial giants had traditionally dominated till now.
The company's stellar market performance has paved the way for this achievement, with impressive gains of 38% over six months and a remarkable 124.79% surge year-to-date. However, in an ironic twist, the immediate market reaction saw Zomato's stock price plunge by 3.15% to Rs 278.70, with its market capitalization at Rs 2.68 lakh crore ($31.9 billion).
Unsurprisingly, Zomato's financial performance paints a compelling growth story. The company's Q2 results showcase a dramatic 68.5% quarter-on-quarter revenue jump to Rs 4,799 crore, coupled with a substantial increase in net profit to Rs 176 crore. In sharp contrast, Zomato's nearest rival, Swiggy, reported Rs 3,601 crore in revenue alongside a Rs 625 crore loss during the same period.
Recently, Zomato raised $1 billion from qualified institutional investors, demonstrating strong investor confidence. Zomato aims to use these funds for future expansion and investments into other verticals.
Zomato's journey to Sensex reflects its bold business approach, marked by strategic moves like the Blinkit acquisition and innovative marketing strategies. The company is known to push boundaries and think outside the box in the food domain, thus validating its high entry into the elite BSE 30 Sensex club through strong execution and market leadership.
This development has definitely set a strong precedent for other aspiring Indian startups to join the ranks of the country's most valued companies.
