Bengaluru-based digital wealth management platform Scripbox demonstrated moderate growth in FY24. Its operational revenue climbed 44.4% to Rs 84.33 crore, and it successfully reduced its losses through strategic cost management.

Scripbox's revenue streams are pretty diversified across various financial services, and leading the pack is brokerage and commission income at Rs 77.02 crore, which represents a whopping 91.3% of operational revenue. They also have additional income sources, including a measly Rs 6.2 crore from investment advisory services and a paltry Rs 1.07 crore from portfolio management. Including interest and financial asset gains of Rs 6.15 crore, the company's total revenue reached Rs 90.5 crore in FY24.

However, a significant achievement for Scripbox was the reduction in loss by 62%, dropping to Rs 44.7 crore in FY24 from Rs 117.65 crore the previous year. This improvement was primarily driven by a 38% reduction in employee benefit expenses to Rs 73.13 crore, though this figure includes Rs 25.72 crore in ESOP expenses.

Ironically, despite managing assets worth Rs 18,500 crore, the company faces efficiency challenges, spending Rs 1.59 to generate each rupee of operating revenue. The firm's operating cash flow turned negative at Rs -11.22 crore, compared to a positive Rs 50.37 crore in FY23. However, its EBITDA margin improved to -32.31%.

Having raised over $55 million to date and valued at approximately Rs 1,150 crore ($137 million), Scripbox operates in an increasingly competitive wealth tech space. While reports suggest ongoing discussions for a $25 million funding round, the company faces significant challenges in scaling beyond affluent urban markets.

The platform's journey reflects a broader challenge in India's wealth management sector: building products that resonate beyond metropolitan areas in a market where traditional investments like property and gold remain dominant.

It definitely remains to be seen whether, despite its user-friendly interface and solid reputation, Scripbox can navigate the complexities of expanding in a low-trust market where digital-only solutions face adoption hurdles among potential investors.
