Upstox, the digital stockbroking platform, has reported impressive financial results for FY24, with revenue growing 25% to Rs 1,311 crore and profits surging eight-fold to Rs 190 crore. This follows the company's strong performance in FY23, when it recorded revenue of Rs 1,050 crore.

"In FY24, we focused on innovation and high-impact growth, ensuring every investor and trader has the best tools at their fingertips. We are building a profitable, innovation-driven, and customer-first company that sets new benchmarks in security, speed, and simplicity," said Ravi Kumar, CEO and Co-founder of Upstox.

The platform offers a comprehensive suite of investment products including stocks, IPOs, futures & options, commodities, currencies, fixed deposits, and insurance, and has built a substantial user base of 1.7 crore customers. Notably, 85% of its users come from tier II and III cities, indicating strong penetration in non-metropolitan areas.

Upstox has raised over $200 million to date and carries a valuation of $3.5 billion from its last funding round. The ownership structure shows Tiger Global as the largest external stakeholder with 38.54%, while the founding team of Ravi Kumar, Shrinivas Vishwanath, and Kavitha Subramanian collectively holds 36.12%. Director Raghu Nathan Kumar maintains a 15% stake. In October 2024, the company provided a 10X return to early investor Ratan Tata through a partial buyback.

The company's performance comes amid intense competition in India's retail broking space. According to National Stock Exchange data, Upstox ranks fourth in active users with 2.89 million, behind market leaders Groww, Zerodha, and Angel One. In FY24, Groww reported revenue of Rs 3,145 crore, while Zerodha posted impressive figures of Rs 8,370 crore in revenue and Rs 5,496 crore in profits. Angel One recorded revenue of Rs 4,280 crore.

The broking industry's landscape has evolved significantly, moving beyond Zerodha's earlier dominance. While a sustained bull market has supported user growth, the sector faces new challenges, including recent restrictions on retail F&O trading and market volatility since August 2024. These factors are expected to impact industry performance in 2025-26.

Upstox's strategic focus on tier II and III cities appears to be paying off, as the company maintains profitability while avoiding direct competition with Zerodha and Groww in metropolitan areas. The industry has also shown maturity by avoiding price wars, despite strong balance sheets across major players.

As funded entities, both Upstox and Groww may face increasing pressure to go public. Industry observers anticipate these potential IPOs could command higher valuations compared to traditional bank-owned broking firms, given their technology-first approach and broader market reach.
