upGrad Launches AI Incubator with Rs 100 Crore Fund for Indian Startups
Edtech major upGrad has unveiled a new AI incubator initiative backed by an initial allocation of Rs 100 crore. The initiative aims to foster Indigenous artificial intelligence startups.
The Mumbai-based company plans to provide emerging AI ventures with critical infrastructure resources and seed capital to accelerate product innovation in the burgeoning sector.
Ronnie Screwvala, Co-founder and Chairperson of upGrad emphasized the strategic importance of AI capabilities in today's business landscape. "India is sitting at an epicenter where not only do we want to disrupt but also be the disruptor, and so this 'upGrad AI Incubator' is that opportunity—a strong incubating combinator that will turbocharge our people resources and aspirations to the next phase of growth we want to see," Screwvala said in a statement.
The incubator will focus mainly on startups developing plug-and-play AI technologies in learning, skilling, and workforce development. A key criterion for selected startups will be their ability to create solutions compatible across industries to maximize scalability and operational efficiency.
Bengaluru-based ZuAI, which offers an AI-powered 24/7 personal tutoring solution for students, marks the incubator's first investment, though financial details remain undisclosed.
The company stated that its incubator will leverage AI to create personalized educational resources with adaptive learning paths, one-to-many tutoring models, and more effective assessment tools designed to reduce test fatigue while enhancing practical application.
"As AI is in its early stages, we are committed to building a robust infrastructure that supports and trains millions across all economic levels—through upskilling and nurturing ideas and talent," noted Screwvala, adding that this initiative would strengthen workforce development capabilities and help create "jobs of tomorrow."
The announcement follows upGrad's recent series of industry and government partnerships aimed at equipping over one million learners with practical AI skills and establishing AI Centers of Excellence throughout Maharashtra, initiatives backed by an initial investment of Rs 2,150 crore.
