Uber Introduces Teen-Focused Ride Service in India, Expands to 35 Cities
Uber has launched its new ride-hailing service tailored for teenagers, called Uber for Teens, in India. The pilot program is currently available in Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, and Mumbai, with plans to expand to 35 additional cities, including Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune, in the coming weeks.
The service allows parents or guardians to create accounts for teenagers aged 13 to 17 and book rides independently using their devices. Guardians can also book rides on behalf of their teens and set monthly trip limits to control usage. To get started, guardians must link a credit or debit card to their Uber account and add their teenager to their family profile.
As safety is a top priority for Uber for Teens, hence the service includes essential features like live trip tracking and opt-in audio recording. These features provide parents with real-time updates and peace of mind. And that is not all, Uber has also committed to conducting additional background checks on drivers to ensure a secure experience for young riders. While teens can bring fellow riders aged 13-17 on trips, the specifics of how consent will be managed for this feature are still unclear.
This launch comes nearly two years after Uber for Teens was first introduced in the U.S. and Canada. According to Uber's Q4 results statement last month, the service is now available in approximately 50 countries.
The introduction of Uber for Teens is part of Uber’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence in India’s competitive ride-hailing market. Its fiercest competitors include Ola, Rapido, Namma Yatri, and BluSmart. Over the past few months, Uber has introduced several India-specific features to cater to local preferences, including concurrent rides, flexible pricing, and prepaid item pickups. In other news, Uber also recently replaced commissions on auto-rickshaw bookings with a daily subscription charge, hence making the service more affordable for users.
By launching Uber for Teens, the company aims to address the growing demand for safe and reliable transportation options for young riders in India. The service provides convenience for families and aligns with Uber’s goal of expanding its user base in one of its most important markets.
