Elon Musk's Tesla has ramped up its India recruitment efforts, posting 20 new positions across Maharashtra as the electric vehicle maker moves to establish its first retail footprint in the country. The hiring push comes as Tesla finalizes a deal for a premium showroom in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex.

The company listed 15 openings in Mumbai, spanning roles from Service Technicians and Tesla Advisors to Store Managers and Customer Support Specialists. Tesla's planned 4,000-square-foot BKC showroom will reportedly cost the company about Rs 35 lakh monthly in lease payments, marking one of the priciest commercial rentals in the financial hub.

Tesla's Pune office, its first in India, seeks five technical specialists, including Application Product Engineers and PCB Designers. Pune's established automotive ecosystem, home to Mercedes-Benz and Tata Motors facilities, makes it a logical base for Tesla's operations.

Beyond retail expansion, Tesla appears to be exploring manufacturing possibilities in Maharashtra. Government officials have suggested sites near Pune in the Chakan and Chikhali industrial zones as potential locations for production facilities.

The EV maker plans to follow its Mumbai launch with a second showroom in Delhi's Aerocity, targeting India's two most significant luxury car markets. Industry watchers note that Tesla faces substantial hurdles in the price-conscious Indian market, where its premium vehicles will compete against established domestic and international brands.

Tesla's entry strategy focuses on building its direct-to-consumer sales network before manufacturing commitments, aligning with ongoing government work on new EV policy frameworks. The company's recruitment drive signals its seriousness about tapping into India's growing electric mobility market despite past regulatory challenges that delayed its entry.
