ShopKirana's Financial Woes: Can It Survive Q-Commerce?
B2B e-commerce platform ShopKirana faced headwinds in FY24, reporting a 6.26% decline in gross revenue to Rs 639.16 crore, even though the company struggled hard to trim its losses significantly in a challenging market environment.
The platform, which serves as a digital bridge between retailers and brands, saw its core product sales revenue dip to Rs 637.32 crore, representing nearly all operational income. A bright spot emerged in service revenue, which grew by 85.29% to Rs 1.26 crore. Additional non-operating income of Rs 4.2 crore brought total revenue to Rs 643.37 crore.
ShopKirana focused on cost optimization as a key focus area to cut its losses, implementing substantial reductions across significant expense categories. They succeeded, too, on numerous fronts. Their material costs, the most important expense item, decreased by 7.14% to Rs 627.3 crore, while employee costs saw a 17.65% reduction to Rs 35 crore. These efficiency measures and cuts in transportation and other operational costs helped reduce total expenses by 8.81% to Rs 698.63 crore.
These small but substantial efforts yielded results in terms of loss reduction, with the company's losses shrinking by 30.5% to Rs 55.25 crore. However, key performance indicators remained challenging, with a negative ROCE of -69.6% and an EBITDA margin of -7.85%. The company maintained a reasonable liquidity position with Rs 90.75 crore in current assets, including Rs 27.8 crore in cash reserves.
The sector's fundamental challenges persist in the competitive B2B e-commerce landscape, where ShopKirana faces off against larger rivals like the mammoth Udaan (with Rs 5,706.6 crore GMV) and Jumbotail. Despite having raised $50.46 million from notable investors, including Info Edge and Sixth Sense Ventures, ShopKirana is still grappling with tight margins, which are typical of the B2B sector.
Now, the obvious question and the elephant in the room is the appeal of the quick commerce sector, which lures customers hook, line, and sinker. Apart from that, other significant challenges are the limited financing options and the constant need to balance growth with profitability to satisfy the investors.
This rugged business environment suggests impending strategic shifts for many players in this domain, which might include probable diversification into new revenue streams, collaboration, or significant business model adjustments.
Will B2B and Quick-Commerce exist peacefully in these turbulent times? It definitely remains to be seen!
