Razorpay Marks Decade Anniversary with Company-Wide Rs 1 Lakh ESOP Grant
Fintech unicorn Razorpay has announced a sweeping employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) initiative, granting shares worth Rs 1 lakh to each of its 3,000-plus employees as part of its 10th-anniversary celebrations. The YCombinator-backed company's decision ensures all current employees, known internally as 'Razors,' have a stake in its future growth regardless of their position or tenure.
The latest ESOP allocation builds on Razorpay's history of employee wealth creation programs, following its first buyback in 2018 that benefited 140 employees and a substantial $75 million buyback in 2022 that created value for 650 current and former team members. CEO Harshil Mathur emphasized that the initiative reflects Razorpay's commitment to share its success with each and every employee. On the other hand, the co-founder and Managing Director Shashank Kumar noted that this latest ESOP initiative reinforces Razorpay's long-term culture of acknowledging team contributions and fostering shared success.
Founded in 2014 by Harshil Mathur and Shashank Kumar, IIT Roorkee graduates, Razorpay has transformed from a payment gateway provider into a comprehensive financial solutions platform. The company now serves over 8 million businesses, including industry giants like Facebook, Airtel, Ola, Zomato, and IRCTC, processing transactions worth more than $100 billion annually. Razorpay became a unicorn in 2020 with a $1 billion valuation and securing over $740 million in funding from prestigious investors, including Sequoia Capital, GIC, and Ribbit Capital.
Through strategic acquisitions of companies like Thirdwatch, Opfin, and IZealiant Technologies, Razorpay has expanded its service portfolio to include business banking through RazorpayX, working capital loans via Razorpay Capital, and comprehensive payroll management solutions.
The future is indeed bright for Razorpay as it looks at international expansion and plans to start with Southeast Asian markets. The firm continues pushing boundaries in embedded finance and cross-border payments while focusing on employee ownership and value creation. Razorpay also plans to diversify in other domains, such as tax payment solutions and neobanking services.
The company's evolution mirrors the rapid growth of India's digital payments ecosystem, with Razorpay playing a pivotal role in modernizing financial operations for businesses across the spectrum.
