Perfora's Revenue Soars 30X in Three Years as Electric Toothbrush Demand Surges
Oral-care brand Perfora has exploded onto the premium dental care scene, with revenue rocketing from Rs 1.4 crore in FY22 to over Rs 42 crore in FY24, marking a staggering 30-fold increase in just three years.
According to consolidated financial statements filed with the Registrar of Companies, the Gurugram-based direct-to-consumer brand saw its sales nearly triple in the last fiscal year alone, jumping from Rs 15 crore to Rs 42.2 crore.
Perfora's product lineup, featuring customizable electric toothbrushes, natural ingredient toothpastes, and alcohol-free mouthwashes, has struck a chord with urban Indian consumers looking for premium oral hygiene solutions.
Marketing efforts drove the company's most significant expense, with advertising costs tripling to Rs 20.5 crore, representing 38% of total expenses. Material costs doubled to Rs 19.5 crore while staff expenses climbed to Rs 3.7 crore, contributing to overall costs of Rs 54 crore – up 2.6 times from the previous year.
Despite impressive revenue growth, the DSG Consumer Partners-backed startup saw losses more than double to Rs 10.6 crore. The company's financials reveal challenging unit economics, spending Rs 1.28 to generate each rupee of operating revenue, with an EBITDA margin of -23.23%.
At fiscal year-end, Perfora maintained Rs 24 crore in current assets, including Rs 9.6 crore in cash reserves, which provided some runway as it pursued profitability in the competitive oral care market.
According to TheKredible, the startup has raised $4 million to date. Sauce VC leads investment rounds and holds a 16% stake. Co-founders Jatan Bawa and Tushar Khurana maintain significant control with a combined 48.5% ownership.
Perfora's rapid growth highlights the increasing consumer adoption of electric toothbrushes and premium oral care products in India. However, the brand faces pressure to validate its business model with improved financial metrics in FY25 amid questions about the size of its addressable market.
The premium oral care segment represents a relatively untested category in the Indian consumer market. Despite Perfora's impressive early traction, limited data is available on its long-term potential.
