Ola's AI subsidiary Krutrim announced a strategic partnership with Lenovo to develop Krutrim 3, a massive 700-billion-parameter large language model, while simultaneously constructing India's largest supercomputer.

Navendu Agarwal, Ola's Chief Information Officer, unveiled the collaboration at a Lenovo event in Mumbai, positioning Krutrim 3 as India's competitive entry in the global artificial intelligence race.

"This represents India's answer to the international AI competition," Agarwal stated during the announcement.

The initiative builds on Ola founder Bhavish Aggarwal's existing Rs 2,000 crore investment in Krutrim, with plans to increase funding fivefold to Rs 10,000 crore next year. The company currently employs 700 researchers and developers focused exclusively on AI advancement.

Krutrim has already released two open-source AI models: Krutrim 1, featuring 7 billion parameters and launched in late 2023, and the more advanced 12-billion-parameter Krutrim 2. The dramatic scale-up to 700 billion parameters with Krutrim 3 represents a significant technological leap for Indigenous Indian AI development.

The company emphasizes creating independent, hyperscale AI infrastructure and a sovereign cloud computing ecosystem to reduce India's technological dependence on foreign entities.

Krutrim is developing proprietary AI chips to power these ambitious projects while also deploying Nvidia's GB200 Superchips. Previously, the company integrated AI models from Chinese startup DeepSeek on domestic servers to enhance data security and reduce training expenses.

Bhavish Aggarwal talked in detail about the strategic importance of these developments on social media. He emphasizing that, "India needs large-scale AI infrastructure to compete globally." He also invited public suggestions for naming the forthcoming supercomputer, engaging the tech community in this landmark national AI project.

The critically important Ola-Lenovo partnership is a huge milestone in India's quest for technological self-reliance. And of course, it also positions India as one of the contenders in the rapidly evolving global AI landscape.
