Mumbai Startup QubeHealth Makes Healthcare Expenses More Manageable for Corporate Employees
QubeHealth is tackling India's growing healthcare cost crisis by offering employees immediate access to medical funds through UPI-based payments, no-cost financing, and embedded insurance solutions.
Healthcare costs in India are spiraling upward at an annual rate of 14%, with 62% of hospital expenses paid out of pocket and 23% covered through borrowings, according to the Acko India Health Insurance Index 2024. This financial burden has forced many Indians to liquidate savings or assets for medical care.
"While corporate insurance penetration is high, employees still struggle with everyday costs that are either uncovered or require cumbersome reimbursements," said Chris George, Co-founder and CEO of QubeHealth.
George and Gagan Kapur launched the Mumbai-based B2B healthcare payments startup in 2019 to integrate flexible payment solutions into employee benefits packages. The platform now serves over 300 companies and covers approximately 150,000 employees and their families.
How QubeHealth's Healthcare Financing Works
QubeHealth covers expenses typically excluded from traditional insurance plans, including eye care, dental work, skincare treatments, and even pet care costs. The platform seamlessly integrates with corporate HR and payroll systems to provide employees with pre-approved medical credit without lengthy verification processes.
Its Qube Pay feature enables UPI payments to any healthcare provider in India, while Qube Cash offers a pre-approved healthcare credit line of up to Rs 10 lakh with no-cost EMIs for 12 months. Both services can be used across hospitals, diagnostic centers, pharmacies, and telemedicine providers.
"Employees no longer need to worry about paying out of pocket and then waiting for reimbursements. With our platform, they can directly pay for healthcare services using their QubeHealth credit line," George explained.
The startup charges companies a subscription fee of Rs 720 per employee annually. Employees access benefits through the QubeHealth app. Notable clients include Ninjacart, Airmeet, Colossal, Licious, and Popeyes.
Addressing Healthcare Financing Challenges
According to PolicyBazaar.com and PolicyX, traditional group health insurance premiums in India typically range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 per employee annually. Smaller firms spend around Rs 13,317 per employee, while larger companies allocate about Rs 19,722.
QubeHealth claims it will process over Rs 100 crore in healthcare payments by the end of this financial year, emphasizing bank-grade security protocols to protect sensitive healthcare financing data.
"We follow stringent security measures, ensuring only authorized personnel can access relevant data. Every action is logged for transparency and compliance," said George.
Funding and Future Expansion
In November 2024, the Mumbai startup secured undisclosed funding from Unicorn India Ventures and CanBank Venture Capital Fund to enhance its technology and launch new features, including embedded insurance options, a Gen-AI-powered recommendation engine, and a healthcare marketplace.
George revealed the company is currently seeking to raise approximately $9 million in a Series A funding round at a valuation of Rs 270 crore.
With the Indian health and medical insurance market projected to grow from an estimated Rs 101,000 crore in 2025 to Rs 167,000 crore by 2030 (CAGR of 10.6%), QubeHealth plans to expand beyond corporate partnerships by collaborating with insurance providers, fintech companies, and healthcare institutions to enhance its ecosystem.
The company competes with ekincare, Plum, HealthAssure, and Visit Health in India's employee benefits space. It differentiates itself through flexible healthcare payment options and interest-free financing that covers extended family members.
