Meta Platforms will begin testing a paid subscription service for its AI-powered chatbot Meta AI in the second quarter of 2025, according to a source familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters on Thursday.

The social media giant's move mirrors subscription models already established by OpenAI's ChatGPT Plus and Microsoft's Copilot Pro, which offer users premium access to advanced artificial intelligence features and capabilities.

Revenue from the subscription service isn't expected to significantly impact Meta's bottom line until 2026 at the earliest.

Meta AI, launched in September 2023, is a virtual assistant powered by large language models to handle complex reasoning tasks across the company's family of apps, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Beyond the subscription test, Meta reportedly plans to launch a standalone Meta AI application in the second quarter, separate from its existing social media platforms, according to CNBC's earlier reporting, which cited people familiar with the matter.

The company has also established a new division within its Reality Labs unit focused on developing AI-powered humanoid robots to assist with physical tasks, further diversifying its artificial intelligence portfolio.

Meta's investment strategy reflects the broader tech industry trend of pouring billions into AI infrastructure development following ChatGPT's market success. Microsoft recently announced plans to invest approximately $80 billion in data centers during fiscal 2025, while Amazon projected its 2025 infrastructure spending would exceed its estimated $75 billion expenditure for 2024.

The competitive landscape for conversational AI assistants intensifies as significant tech companies vie for market share in what many industry analysts consider the next frontier of consumer-facing artificial intelligence technology and potential subscription revenue streams.
