Meta Layoffs - Thousands of Jobs Scrapped in Push for AI Talent
Meta is cutting 4,000 jobs this week, and pink slips have already arrived in employee inboxes across Asia and the US. The Facebook parent company says it's clearing the house to make room for artificial intelligence experts.
"We're raising the bar," Mark Zuckerberg told staff in January, warning that low performers would be shown the door. But some departing employees tell a different story.
"I'm shocked," one laid-off worker told Business Insider. "I had great feedback from my manager just six months ago. Now I'm suddenly a poor performer?"
Due to local labor laws, the cuts do not affect some European countries like Germany and France. However, workers in other parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa will receive termination notices by mid-February.
US employees being let go will get 16 weeks of pay plus two weeks for each year they worked at Meta. The company targets people with the lowest two ratings in performance reviews.
Fear is spreading inside Meta's offices. "Mark is creating a culture where you have to be loyal to him or else," one employee said. Another compared working there now to "living in a George Orwell novel."
Meta's restructuring is undoubtedly influenced by a broader trend in the tech industry. Microsoft, Amazon, and Salesforce are also implementing significant workforce reductions. Meta's focus on AI investment signals a shift in priorities for the tech giant, as it positions itself for future technological developments.
These layoffs undoubtedly mark another significant transformation for Meta, which aims to be future-proof. The company is trying to navigate the precarious balance between maintaining operational efficiency and investing heavily in future technology.
The shakeup comes as other tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and Salesforce slash jobs. But Meta's focus on hiring AI talent shows where Zuckerberg thinks the future lies - even if it means pushing out thousands of current staff to get there.
The cuts are hitting hard. "When I got the email, I couldn't believe it," said another employee who was let go. "My manager always said I was doing great work. Something doesn't add up here."
