Instagram is exploring the development of a dedicated app for its Reels feature, potentially separating the short-form video platform from its primary application.

Undoubtedly, the possibility of a new app focused on just Reels is based on TikTok's precarious position in the United States market. Adam Mosseri reportedly discussed the possibility during an Instagram employee meeting this week.

U.S. lawmakers have increasingly voiced concerns about the platform's ties to its China-based parent company, ByteDance, with some pushing for outright restrictions. A standalone Reels app would position Meta to capture users seeking an alternative video-scrolling experience should TikTok face limitations or a shutdown.

This initiative follows Meta's broader pattern of investment in short-form video content. Last month, the company launched Edits, a video-editing application that industry observers view as a competitor to ByteDance's popular CapCut editing tool.

Meta's history with standalone video applications includes previous attempts like Lasso, launched in 2018 as an early response to TikTok's rising popularity. That venture was ultimately shuttered after failing to gain meaningful user adoption.

The company has been steadily enhancing the Reels experience within Instagram, recently adding new features, including music sharing in direct messages, translation capabilities, and scheduled posts.

Neither Instagram nor Meta has officially confirmed plans for a standalone Reels application, and the timeline for any potential launch remains unclear.
