Indian AI Startup Sarvam to Bid for Government's Foundational AI Project
Sarvam, the Bengaluru AI startup, plans to throw its hat in the ring for India's national AI initiative.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology recently invited proposals to create Indigenous foundational AI models as part of the Indian mission. Speaking about the opportunity, Sarvam Co-Founder Pratyush Kumar expressed enthusiasm for the government's initiative. The company confirmed it will submit a proposal to the Ministry of Electronics and IT's recent call for homegrown foundational AI models.
"The emergence of companies like DeepSeek has sparked important questions about India's position in AI development," Kumar said. "Without developing sovereign AI capabilities, we risk falling behind as we have in previous technological waves."
"The success of DeepSeek has been a wake-up call," said Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar. "If India doesn't step up now in developing sovereign AI capabilities, we risk getting left behind again, just like in previous tech waves."
The government's IndiaAI program aims to reduce India's dependence on foreign AI technology by fostering domestic innovation. The timing couldn't be better for Sarvam, which has been quietly building its own family of AI models.
Kumar revealed that the company will roll out its comprehensive AI models by year-end. These will handle everything from analysis to research queries without additional tools or supplements.
In India's AI journey, this is a very critical chapter as countries worldwide are in a head-to-head race develop their own AI tech, hoping to break free from the dominance of Silicon Valley giants. And with its proposal, Sarvam hopes to position itself at the forefront of India's push for tech independence.
