First 'Made in India' Semiconductor Chip to Launch This Year, Says IT Minister
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that India's first domestically manufactured semiconductor chip will be unveiled this year, marking a significant milestone in the country's semiconductor journey. The announcement came during the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Vaishnaw highlighted strong industry confidence in India's semiconductor program.
"Our first 'Made in India' chip will be rolled out this year and now we are looking at the next phase, where we can get equipment manufacturers, material manufacturers and designers in India," Vaishnaw stated. The minister emphasized the technical challenges ahead, noting the need to achieve parts per billion purity levels in materials, up from current parts per million standards.
This development is part of the broader Semicon India program, launched in December 2021 with a Rs 76,000 crore outlay.
India has already attracted significant international investment in its semiconductor ambitions. NXP Semiconductors has committed over $1 billion to expand its R&D operations in India. Micron Technology is establishing a $2.75 billion assembly and testing facility in Gujarat, which is expected to generate 5,000 direct jobs and 15,000 community positions. Additionally, Analog Devices is exploring semiconductor manufacturing opportunities in collaboration with the Tata Group.
To streamline these efforts, the government established the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) as an independent division within Digital India Corporation, giving it administrative and financial autonomy to develop long-term semiconductor manufacturing and design ecosystem development strategies.
According to Reuters, India's semiconductor market exhibits promising growth potential and it could reach $60+ billion in the next 12 months. Undoubtedly, the successful launch of India's first domestic chip would represent a crucial step toward reducing dependency on semiconductor imports. This chip would definitely go a long way in establishing the country as a global manufacturing hub.
