Dunzo CEO Kabeer Biswas Steps Down After 10-Year Tenure
In a significant development for India's hyperlocal delivery sector, Dunzo co-founder and CEO Kabeer Biswas is departing the company after leading it for over a decade, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Biswas's departure follows the earlier departures of fellow co-founders Mukund Jha, Dalvir Suri, and Ankur Agarwal. While the company will continue its current operations, sources indicate that Biswas's resignation has been accepted. A formal announcement is expected in the coming weeks.
Biswas's departure comes amid significant challenges for Dunzo, which has reportedly struggled with financial difficulties, including delayed employee salaries. Notably, Biswas himself has not received a salary for approximately 20 months.
Earlier in June 2024, Biswas had registered a new venture, Nexavise Solutions, with former co-founder Ankur Agarwal, though sources indicate these plans have since been abandoned.
The company's recent history has been marked by several setbacks. Attempts to secure a buyout through discussions with Swiggy and BigBasket have failed, and the company has seen an exodus of board members, with major investors, including Google and Lightrock, vacating their positions.
Dunzo was founded in 2014 as a modest WhatsApp group. It has since grown to become a significant player in India's hyperlocal delivery market, attracting investments from prominent backers, including Reliance, Google, Blume Ventures, and Lightrock. However, intense competition from well-funded rivals like Zepto, Swiggy Instamart, and Zomato-owned Blinkit, combined with high cash burn rates, has significantly impacted the company's operations.
Despite consistently raising capital from 2015 through 2022, Dunzo has faced mounting operational challenges. The company has struggled with vendor payments, which have obviously resulted in multiple legal notices and lawsuits. Moreover, its growth has stagnated even as competitors in the quick commerce space continue to expand and introduce new services.
Biswas has not responded to requests for comment regarding his future plans.
