Bengaluru Startup Digantara to Launch Revolutionary Space Debris Monitoring Satellite
In a significant advancement for space safety, Bengaluru-based startup Digantara is preparing to launch the world's first commercial satellite capable of tracking objects as small as 5 centimeters in Earth's orbit. The spacecraft, named Space Camera for Object Tracking (SCOT), is scheduled for launch via SpaceX's Transporter-12 mission from California around midnight on Tuesday.
The launch comes at a crucial time when space debris monitoring has become increasingly critical. Just last month, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was forced to delay the launch of its SpaDeX satellites by two minutes due to orbital congestion. With spacecraft traveling at speeds exceeding 25,000 kilometers per hour, even minor collisions with space debris could have catastrophic consequences.
"With SCOT, we are taking a crucial step in achieving surveillance superiority," said Anirudh Sharma, Founder and CEO of Digantara Aerospace. "This ensures not only a safer and more sustainable space environment but also safeguards sovereign assets in an increasingly contested space domain."
The mission represents a significant leap forward in Situational Space Awareness (SSA). This field has become vital as Earth's orbits become increasingly crowded with both operational satellites and space debris. SCOT's capabilities are expected to enhance space safety, improve traffic management, and strengthen national security initiatives.
This development comes as global space organizations grapple with the growing challenge of managing orbital traffic and debris. The ability to track objects as small as 5 centimeters could significantly reduce the risk of collisions in space and help maintain the integrity of crucial satellite operations.
