Alibaba Continues Aggressive Share Buyback Program, Spending $1.3B in Latest Quarter
Alibaba Group purchased 119 million ordinary shares worth $1.3 billion in the U.S. market over the past quarter to boost shareholder value. The Chinese e-commerce giant revealed it spent $9.9 billion on stock buybacks during the six months ending September 30, 2024.
The company's board-authorized share repurchase program, which runs until March 2027, has $20.7 billion remaining. This follows a substantial $12.5 billion allocation for share repurchases in fiscal year 2024, which ended March 31, 2024.
The buyback program comes amid a period of strategic restructuring for Alibaba. The company has started refocusing on its core businesses, which comprise e-commerce, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence. This strategic shift can be seen in Alibaba's recent moves, such as selling its $1.7 billion stake in Sun Art Retail Group and new partnerships in the AI sector.
The company has been particularly active in expanding its AI capabilities. Its cloud division recently announced a partnership with 01.AI to develop large-model solutions for business clients. In a competitive move, Alibaba Cloud has also cut prices for its AI models by up to 85%, bringing costs in line with rival ByteDance's offerings.
Alibaba's grocery retail chain, Freshippo, has shown strong performance, with nine consecutive months of profitability in 2024. The company has expanded to 400 stores across 50 cities. The company has also strengthened its international presence through a significant joint venture with South Korea's E-Mart Inc., which is targeting a $4 billion valuation in the e-commerce sector.
These developments suggest Alibaba is actively streamlining its operations. And they also strategically invest in growth areas, like AI and core e-commerce businesses.
