ABB, a global technology company, has announced a strategic investment in Edgecom Energy, a Toronto-based startup that specializes in AI-powered energy management solutions. The deal, announced Monday, expands the partnership between the two companies following Edgecom's win in ABB's 2024 Startup Challenge.

Edgecom has distinguished itself in the market by developing the first energy management platform to incorporate a generative AI copilot. This platform is designed to help industrial and commercial users optimize their power consumption and reduce demand peaks.

The investment comes through ABB Electrification Ventures, which will take a minority stake in Edgecom. This addition brings ABB Electrification Ventures' portfolio to 15 companies, with assets totaling €80 million since 2021.

"Partnerships are key to ABB Electrification's artificial intelligence strategy for energy management," said Massimiliano Cifalitti, President of ABB's Smart Power division. "Edgecom shows how gen AI can create business value from complex data sets with an easy-to-use interface."

The collaboration comes at a crucial time. The International Energy Agency has emphasized the need to double the pace of energy efficiency improvements in the next decade to meet net-zero targets. ABB's Smart Power division will work with Edgecom to develop new AI-enabled solutions for North American customers.
"ABB's commitment to our vision underscores the transformative impact we're bringing to energy management," said Behdad Bahrami, CEO and Co-Founder of Edgecom. "Together, we're empowering large energy users to achieve significant cost savings and emissions reductions."

The partnership will leverage ABB's digitalized electrification solutions and Edgecom's AI Energy Copilot to identify energy-saving opportunities. The system adapts to customer goals, suggesting adjustments to reduce bills and lessen the environment.
This investment is part of ABB Ventures' broader strategy. Since 2010, the company has invested over $450 million in 70 startups in the electrification and automation sectors.
